Reading Your Body-Composition Numbers
Weight is one signal among many. How to think about body composition without fixating on the scale.
The scale measures one thing: total mass. It cannot tell muscle from fat from water, which is why weight can bounce day to day for reasons that have nothing to do with progress — hydration, sodium, sleep, and the normal rhythms of the body.
Body-composition tools estimate the share of your weight that is fat versus lean tissue. At-home devices give trends rather than clinical precision, so the pattern over weeks matters far more than any single reading.
Pairing a few signals — how clothes fit, energy, strength, and a periodic body-composition trend — gives a fuller picture than the scale alone, and tends to be kinder to motivation.
